Turbulent 1960's
The pattern of national involvement alternates between times of activism and times of withdrawl. The 1950’s focused on private family life and self-improvement and less on the greater good and politics. A shift occurred in the 1960’s, and American citizens began to search for something more from their lives. Many young people felt discontented with the passivity of the previous decade. Encouraging participation was reinforced by President John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country”. Other issues followed this movement such as the Civil Rights Movement and anti-war protests. The Cold War also took the spotlight in the 1960's. The use of atomic weapons also became a very controversial topic. The music of the 1960's reflected society at the time. Society reflected the music at the time. The events and music of the turbulent decade of the 1960's were very much intertwined.
