When finished with this section the learner will be able to...

  • create a syllabus using the built-in syllabus tool
  • attach a syllabus using an HTML document
  • link the syllabus tool to the course content (home page)

Using the Built-in Syllabus Tool

The Syllabus tool in FerrisConnect is accessible under both the Build and Teach tabs. The Syllabus may be presented using two options: the built-in syllabus, or as an HTML file attachment.

By default, certain information is already provided with the built-in option, such as the title of the course section, and instructors. This information may not be deleted, but by using the ActionLink menu this information may be hidden. Under the "Add Syllabus Item" menu, instructors and designers may create new sections for the syllabus including: course requirements, lessons, policies, or custom sections. Course goals may also be linked to the syllabus using the built-in tool.

Attaching a File to the Syllabus Tool

Optionally, a syllabus file may be attached to the Syllabus tool. An instructor may choose this option if they have already prepared a syllabus and wish to use this document in lieu of building their syllabus using the built-in tool.

Note: It is strongly recommended that an HTML file be used with the Syllabus tool when selecting the file attachment option. MS Word files, and other word-processing applications are oftentimes not browser-friendly and may cause unnecessary frustration for students if their browsers are not capable of or configured for handling non-web-friendly materials. For more information about converting Word to HTML, please refer to FSU Best Practices for Online Delivery of Instruction (sec.2.4)
