Symptoms

  • When choosing to attach a file to an assignment or an email, a red "X" appears where My Computer should be. This prevents the user from uploading files from his/her computer.

Determining which version(s) of Java is installed (XP/Vista)

  • Open up Control Panel via the Start Menu.
  • If Control Panel is in "Category Mode", on the left side of the window click "Switch to Classic View"
  • Double Click the Java Icon (no Java icon?)
    • Goto the "Java" tab
    • Under Java Application Runtime Settings, click "View"
      • This window tells the user which version(s) of Java are installed. (Image)
  • It is recommended that "1.6.0_05" is the only version installed. (Removing Java)
    • NOTE: If there are multiple versions of Java installed AND 1.6.0_05 is listed, then a quick and temporary remedy would be to uncheck all of the boxes on the right except for the one belonging to 1.6.0_05.

Installing Java 1.6 update 5

  • Follow this link to download Java 1.6 update 5
    • Right click on the link and click "Open in New Window" will keep you on this page.
  • Towards the bottom, click on the "Download JRE" link
    • Platform: Windows
    • Language: Multi-language
    • Agree to the Software License Agreement and click continue
  • Click on the link that says "jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe"
  • Save and run the file. The setup will guide you through installing Java.

Removing Java

  • Open up Control Panel via the Start Menu.
  • Open up "Add/Remove Programs"
  • Scroll down the list and remove any entries that start with Java (Image)

NOTE: It is not necessary to reboot between removing each entry, however after the last version is removed, it is important that you do reboot. FerrisConnect will not work until you do.
