Creating Assignments

You must be in the Build tab to create an assignment. You must be in the Teach tab to view student submissions and to grade assignments.

Assignments posted within the Assignments Tool usually take the form of either submitting a document, or publishing a Webpage. Assignments may be completed by either individuals or groups. Examples of assignments may include downloading, modifying and resubmitting a document (or multimedia file), reading from a text or online journal and submitting a report, creating a Website, or collaborating on a multimedia project with other students.

Completed student work (including group projects) may be "published" or shared with the rest of the class. Grading options include numeric, alphanumeric, and the use of Grading Forms (rubrics). The designer has the option of returning student work and allowing them to resubmit their assignments.

Activity - Create a Personal Homepage Assignment

Create a new assignment by selecting "Assignments" under "Course Tools" in the Build tab.
Entitle the assignment "My Face". Add a brief description and instructions for students
to create a personal homepage similar to a My-Space or Facebook page with links to their
favorite music and video, or they might choose to share about their hobbies, sports
interests, educational goals, etc. Assignment settings should be as follows:
recipients = All students individually, grading = numeric (20 points),
taking back submissions = yes, and publishing submissions = both student and instructor.
Activity - Complete an Assignment as a Student

Click on the Student View tab, and select assignments. Click on the My Face assignment
you created in the previous activity (if you cannot see the My Face activity, return to
the Teach tab and check the assignment settings). Create a simple HTML document.
Include a picture and a little about yourself: musical tastes, hobbies, sports, other.
Submit the assignment.

Grading a Submission

Grading Assignments is accomplished in the Teach tab. There are five tabs in the Assignment dropbox: Submitted, Not Submitted, Graded, Published, and All. Keep in mind the Assignment dropbox is for reviewing student submissions - if a student has not yet submitted their assignment it will not be listed in the dropbox. Submissions which have been returned to students for further editing will appear in the Not Submitted tab.

To grade a submission, click on the "Submitted" tab and the title of the student's submitted assignment. Scroll down to provide student feedback in the Grader/Reviewer Comments textbox. Options for grading include returning the submission to the student for further editing and resubmission, saving the submission for further editing and grading by the instructor, or assigning a grade and returning the student's work.
